So you are ready to build your dream home—how exciting! Now you are probably thinking, “what’s next?” While making the decision to build your dream home is thrilling, it can also feel quite overwhelming.

We’ll cover the initial questions you may have, such as, “how many rooms do I need in my house?” and other tips that will make the home building process a little easier.

How Do I Determine the Amount of Space I’ll Need?

When it comes to figuring out how much space you will need in your home, it is largely based on personal preference. We are more than happy to show you the unique floor plans that we offer, but the most important question will need to be answered based off of your family needs. To help simplify the process we have provided some home search tips determining how big your house should be.

  • Bedroom – If you are a growing family, this is the most important aspect to your new home build. It is important to consider the size of the rooms, not just how many you will need. As your family grows, they may need a space that can easily transition into a functional study space as well as a bedroom.
  • Bathroom – This one ties in with the amount of bedroom space you may need. If you have three kids, then sharing one full bathroom can be difficult. When doing your research, consider the possibility of utilizing the space and proximity of your bedrooms to consider a “Jack and Jill” bathroom option. This is a great option for siblings that share a bathroom space.
  • Living Spaces – Depending on your family needs, there are some things to research and consider when it comes to the living spaces in the home (i.e., kitchen, dining, living room). It’s important to research options such as open-concept design options and the ideal amount of space for an expanding family. If you have a growing family, you’ll want to consider how you will grow into your home. Will you be hosting family gatherings, holiday parties, or kids’ birthdays? These are all things to consider when building.
  • Square footage – When researching the amount of square footage for your new home, make sure to research how to get the most out of your square footage. Adding small room editions and den space are great ways to add extra areas that are easily transitional as your family grows. It is also important to remember most of the time, the square footage in the floor plans do not include basement space. If you plan on turning that space into livable space, include that amount in the total square footage you need, or account for that extra space when planning out your floor plans.
